The conclusion of the regular season is always bitter sweet, but we are extremely excited to offer current members our first complete Extended Season Share.

Full of all the best fall has to offer, crops such as spinach, kale, chard, arugula, head lettuce, potatoes, winter squash, and beets are sure to please.

The winter months on the farm are certainly less hectic, but we manage to keep busy poring over last season's notes, planning, fixing / upgrading equipment, and tending a few late winter crops.  We have also been busy signing folks up for the 2014 growing season, as shares are now open for purchase to the general public.  I personally enjoy the time spent planning and organizing for the upcoming seasons and beyond, as it brings about great hope and optimism. Spring will be upon us soon enough... just be patient.
Weather and temperature wise, the past month or so has been hard on us all.  But I believe most farmers would agree there is an upside to this bitter cold.  Allow me to offer the sunny side of the polar vortex.

As organic farmers we are constantly worried about pests.  The frigid temps have certainly sent a few of our problem pests farther down south, which should result in decreased populations here during the growing season. The ones that try to overwinter in the soil are less likely to survive as the frost line goes deeper and deeper. The colder temperatures should also help to decrease the number and intensity of plant diseases we experience.

Most of our farm activities have been inside and office related.  Thanks to our membership and their early payments, all of our seeds and most of our supplies for the upcoming season have been ordered and paid for.  Yahoo!!!  This allows us to receive early order discounts and helps us keep our share prices down.

Members should keep an eye out for an emailed survey.  The objective of the survey is to help us better understand how Buckhill Farm can make our members' CSA experience more enjoyable, and to also help guide us as we look to expand and offer more options in the future.  Member input is invaluable, so we hope you will take the time to participate.

It is also worth noting that I will be presenting at a few local organizations and one in Berwyn, in an effort to help spread the word and inform others about the wonderful world of Community Supported  Agriculture.  Please see our events calendar for more details.

Well, that is about it for now.  Thank you for reading, stay warm, and keep in mind that spring is only about seven weeks away.

A great big thank you to everyone who was able to make it to our 6th Annual Fall Harvest Festival.  It was a brisk autumn day and fortunately the rain held off just long enough for us to enjoy a wonderful afternoon together.  The children had fun playing in the straw fort, riding on the tractor train, and racing in the potato sacks.

We were so pleased to welcome back our good friends “Gone To Seed”, who played some great finger picking blue grass.

“ The harvest festival is my favorite food experience of the year”, was uttered by an attendee as they said their thank you and good byes that evening.  I must say I have to agree.  The dishes members brought to share that evening were simply superb.  I would like to encourage everyone who brought a dish to post their recipes in the comment section of this post for all to enjoy.

This event certainly embodied the spirit of the farm as we gathered as a community to share and celebrate the bounties of the season.  Thank you again and we look forward to next years festival.

 Yours in the field,

 Farmer Andrew
